The Destro has a sound that has been described as thrash metal, death metal, melodic metal, and groove metal. Though the latter is the most accurate description, all of the rest is total non sense. I personally would call this style southern groove core.Harmony of Discord jumps right into moderately paced sludge that has a sound almost completely identical to southern sludge superstars, Crowbar. The vocals are closer in relation to bands like Full Blown Chaos and A Perfect Murder. I have no real interest in getting into an onslaught of comparisons when breaking down the sound of The Destro, but I guess I have no choice when there is not much here when it comes to originality. “Angel Killer” is a track that does prove The Destro are capable of mixing it up a little bit as they add more dynamics to the vocal track.
Harmony of Discord also contains elements of nu-metal as the band seems to be some kind of bridge for sounds found in late nineties sludge and present day southern nast. “Persistence of Ignorance” is the stand out song in this collection of doobie inspired metal ruckus. This track offers a little more in creativity and delivers the best break down on this record that makes me a believer in the notion that the one string bandit is still on the loose.
The album is simply, mediocre, yet it is an improvement from their 2007 debut. There are too many yawn inspiring break downs that I have heard a million times and I believed had been left for dead. These break downs crawl out of the wood work like zombies that seem to have been re-animated after dying out 5 years ago. The Destro is a band that has over shot their fashionably late entrance by ten years and missed the party entirely. They could have dominated the Ozzfest 2nd stage back in 2000. So if your into bands like the ones I mentioned previously in my “onslaught of comparisons” and bands like Skinlab and Machine Head, then you may possibly find enjoyment in Harmony of Discord.
