Finally, I have seen Trick 'r Treat for myself after hearing about this films greatness since 2007. For whatever bullshit reasons, WB pulled the plug on this film right before its original release date which was October 5, 2007. So much hype has been building about Trick 'r Treat that I figured it could only be a disappointment. The film was far from a let down and it is truly an instant classic. The film uses four separate stories that include a high school principal that lives a secret life as a serial killer, a college virgin, young punks who experience a Halloween prank gone horribly wrong, and a wife who cannot stand her husbands respect for the holiday. By the end of the movie, these four stories finally come together like the end of a Tarantino film. The most important character from Trick 'r Treat is a character named "Sam." Sam appears to be the size of an 8 year old boy with a potato sack over his head, buttons for eyes, and an orange jump suit. I have read others stating that Sam is the best slasher character "since Jason put on the hockey mask." This couldn't be farther from the truth. For one, Sam is far from your typical slasher. Really, he is not even a slasher. This character is more comparable to the rabbit on Donnie Darko, or a character from A Nightmare Before Christmas. But even those comparisons don't even come close to accurately describing what is Sam.
Aside from the wonderfully written script, Trick 'r Treat is visually amazing. Also, there is no aspect of Halloween that cannot be found in this film. Trick 'r Treat completely captures the atmosphere associated with the best holiday of the year and it is Sam's duty to make sure everybody follows the rules and traditions or there will be hell to pay. What truly separates this film from the rest is its ability to make the viewer think and ask questions at the end. Trick 'r Treat inspires conversation and with conversation only comes more questions, interest, and intrigue. I highly recommend this film for any one who loves Horror and Halloween. The movie is out now on DVD.
Score 9/10
